HOME AND EMERGENCY CARE

Please follow Dr. Zach's recommendations in order to achieve your awesome smile!

Keep regular 6 month check-ups with your general dentist

Brushing and flossing

  • Brush with a soft bristle tooth brush 3 times per day for 2 minutes
  • Floss at least 1 time per day
  • Use a toothpaste with fluoride to fight cavities
  • Use a mouthwash with fluoride if necessary

Foods to avoid

  • No hard or sticky foods that can break braces (ice, hard bread or pizza crust, chips, caramels, sticky candy)
  • Limit and reduce sugary snacks and drinks (candy, carbonated sodas)
  • Cut harder foods like apples into pieces
  • No gum!

Common problems with braces

Loose band or bracket

  • Remove the loose part if possible and bring the brace to the next appointment
  • Use wax as needed to stabilize any moveable parts that you cannot remove
  • If it is on a front tooth, please call the office to notify us

poking wires

  • Wax can be placed over poking wires
  • Long wires can be carefully cut with a nail clipper
  • If the wire is causing a serious problem, please call the office to notify us

tooth soreness

  • Tooth soreness is common with braces and using rubber bands; it will improve with time!
  • Over-the-counter pain medication can help with the soreness - use whatever you would normally take for a headache for relief

sores in the mouth

  • Sores in the mouth are common as your cheeks get used to the braces
  • Warm salt water rinses will help with the mouth irritation
  • Topical gels for mouth sores such as Orabase can help reduce the pain from the sores

lost color tie or elastic

  • If a small tie is lost form the wire, it will usually be OK until the next appointment
  • If you notice a tooth shifting, please call the office to notify us
